NLMK Installs Remote Control on Shipping Crane

NLMK, a leading international steel company which produces a comprehensive range of flat and long steel products, recently installed a Laird LRC-M1/CT24 radio remote control on a shipping crane at their Sharon, Pennsylvania facility. Following a rebuild in 2004, the 1955 P&H Overhead Crane was equipped with a radio control and in September 2012 the company decided to update the radio remote control system.

“The crane is used anywhere between 40 and 60 hours a week primarily for shipping outbound products,” said Al Stull, Electrical Maintenance Area Supervisor for NLMK. “It was important that we had a reliable and easy to use remote control system.” NLMK’s P&H Overhead Crane has a 35 ton main hoist and a 15 ton auxiliary hoist with a control voltage of 250VDC, and because of its heavy use, required a rugged yet user-friendly remote control.

The design and weight of the controller were selling points for NLMK. “Our operators really prefer the weight of the Laird control over our older model. It’s much easier to use,” said Stull. “It was also very easy to install since the drawing package was 100% accurate.” In addition to these features, Stull said the location of Laird relative to the NLMK facility was a definite positive as well as Laird’s ability to provide superior customer service.

Overall, Stull is extremely pleased with the new remote control system. “I would certainly consider installing another Laird control system on any NLMK equipment. So far, our experience with Laird has been excellent and their products speak for themselves.”
