Cattron-Theimeg MP 96 keeps locomotives switching for AK Steel
AK Steel, a leading producer of flat-rolled carbon, electrical and stainless steel, is upgrading remote control of 18 locomotives with Laird's Cattron-Theimeg MP 96 Portable Remote Controllers (PRCs).
MP 96 controllers are undergoing installation for locomotive switching operations at four AK Steel facilities in Middletown, Ohio, Ashland, Ky., Rockport, Ind. and Butler, Pa.
“We chose Cattron-Theimeg because of the quality of the product, reasonable price and our positive experiences with previous Cattron products” said Michael Thompson, shift manager at Middletown.
One PRC operator on the ground controls all switching commands and procedures. The MP 96 system contains two separate microprocessors that allow for simultaneous and independent data signal processing of all incoming commands.
The operator receives instantaneous diagnostic information from the locomotive control unit (LCU) to the operator control unit (OCU).
“We’ve been working with the MP 96 for nearly eight months and the system has done just what we want it to do,” Thompson said.
