Laird White Paper Examines How Microwave Absorber Placement Solution Helps Reduce Electromagnetic Interference
January 4, 2018 – Global technology leader Laird (LRD: London) has published a white paper containing evidence why effective placement of microwave absorbers can meet design requirements of today’s thinner, smaller, cramped-for-space mobile devices and other densely configured systems.
In it, Laird, an electronic component manufacturer, describes testing which suggests correct absorber placement at the board level can reduce the disruptive effects of electromagnetic (EM) radiation or “noise” without causing a deterioration of the digital signal of the link. The paper, "Optimized Placement of Microwave Absorbers on High Speed Digital Channels" was co-authored by Laird Senior Staff Scientists Paul Dixon and Mohammad Ala Khorrami along with Todd Steigerwald and Haris Chowdhry of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. It was presented at DesignCon, an industry event in Santa Clara, Cal.
Authors discuss the placement of appropriate microwave absorbers as a potentially reliable solution to meet required EM emission goals of a design team, helped by the dissipation of extra electromagnetic energy into heat.
They note how testing suggested that the specific placement of an appropriate type of microwave absorber designed for cavity resonant damping and a channel noise suppressor (paper spacer) can substantially redirect and reduce EM radiations without deteriorating the signal integrity performance of the digital link.
Specifically, the tested application involved the correct positioning of the spacer between the absorber and noise sources.
This procedure, authors say, can serve to help pass radio frequency interference internal requirements, which state that stringent EM radiation limits must be met in mixed signal system platforms and mobile devices.
