LAIRD TECHNOLOGIES PROTECTS PATENT RIGHTS
Company Wins Patent Infringement Suit in Korea; Maintains Strong Intellectual Property Portfolio
ST. LOUIS, MO USA — (May 23, 2007) — Laird Technologies, a global leader of critical components and systems for advanced electronics and wireless products, recently won its patent infringement law suit filed at the Seoul High Court in Korea against SB Telecom in August 2002 for infringement of Laird Technologies’ antenna patents registered in Korea related to retractable antennas used in mobile phones.
In response to Laird Technologies suit, SB Telecom filed two pairs of suits in October 2002 and November 2002, respectively, seeking to invalidate the patents and to confirm the scope of the patents.
As a result of the invalidation proceedings, Laird Technologies received favorable decisions from the Korean Supreme Court that the patents are valid with unchanged claims. The Supreme Court also confirmed that the half wave products in question were within the scope of the patents. Following these decisions, the Seoul High Court ruled that SB Telecom did infringe on Laird Technologies’ Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs). Compensation for financial damages are being sought from SB Telecom.
Laird Technologies believes that in order to continue to bring advanced technologies and products to its customers, it is essential that significant investment in research and development must be maintained and this investment must be protected by strong IPR. The ruling by the court in this matter is encouraging and will help consumers benefit from continued technology investment.
