Dual-Band N PCI Express for Rugged Windows Devices

The PE15N module is an 802.11n PCI Express Mini Card with all key Laird Wi-Fi hardware and software capabilities. This dual-band radio module operates in both the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency bands supporting IEEE 802.11n as well as 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. As a result, the PE15N module is ideal for integration into a vehicle-mounted mobile computer or any other business-critical mobile device that runs Windows XP/Windows 7.

Compliance
Certifications Cisco_Compatible_35x30 Cisco Compatible Extensions (Version 4)
Warranty Limited Lifetime

All specifications are subject to change without notice

The PE15N is certified for compliance to various ETSI, FCC, MIC (formerly TELEC), and Industry Canada standards as well as Wi-Fi Alliance and Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) specifications. The grants, approvals, and formal test reports associated with these certifications may be leveraged by Laird customers to achieve their required device certifications. The degree to which customers can leverage these certifications is dependent upon the regulatory agency, industry body, and the type of end device.

If any additional information or guidance is required, please contact the Laird wireless certifications group via email or by telephone at 330.434.7929.

CE & ETSI

The PE15N has been tested for compliance for various CE and ETSI standards and specifications:

This testing was conducted with the following antennas:

Note: There were no changes made between the Broadcom and the Laird versions of this product that impact these ETSI standards. Therefore, Broadcom reports for these standards are linked above. Laird Technologies customers may leverage these documents accordingly.

These formal test reports may be leveraged by mobile and portable device vendors as part of their self declaration to obtain the CE mark required by members of the European Union. ETSI/CE rules differ from those of the FCC and IC in that there is no provision for a modular approval. All approvals and certifications must exist at the device level rather than the module (radio) level.

Laird has obtained a Frequency Authority Certificate for the PE15N in compliance with Annex IV procedures in article 10.5 of R&TTE directive 99/5/EC. Like all Laird Wi-Fi modules, the PE15N is fully compliant with European Union Directive 2003/95/EC or Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) as per our Declaration of Compliance.

Laird PE15N, EC15N, and EC25N EN 300 328 v1.8.1 Updates

EN 300 328 v.1.8.1, which officially goes into effect on January 2015, includes new mandatory spectrum sharing requirements with the goal of reducing interference within the 2.4 GHz band. The following are the two main ways to achieve this: 

  • By incorporating adaptivity functionality such as DAA (Detect and Avoid), CCA (Clear Channel Assessment), and LBT (Listen Before Talk). 
  • By reducing the radio’s power, duty cycle, or both

The 15-series and 25-series radios rely on the Broadcom BCM4322 chip. Due to this, these radios have issues with the CCA aspects of spectrum sharing. Although we have received an Adaptivity Statement for the BCM4322, this is the extent of the assistance we have received from Broadcom. Despite repeated requests to Broadcom over the past 12 months, we have not received test reports that support this compliance or firmware updates to fix the CCA issues.

Given the above, our customers with these products currently have the following options: 

  • Accept Broadcom’s Declaration of Conformity for the BCM4322 chip
  • Lower the power level of the applicable radios to less than 10 mW (E.I.R.P.)
  • Turn off the N-rates
  • Discontinue the sale of these radios to countries in which this ETSI standard applies

Note: The upcoming NDIS6 driver for the PE15N does adhere the EN 300 328 v1.8.1 requirements. Upgrading to the NDIS6 driver is an additional option for customer currently running Windows 7.

FCC

Laird has received the following FCC grants for the PE15N (FCC identifier TWG-SDCPE15N):

Part 15.247 Digital Transmission System (DTS)

This grant relates to operation in the 2.412 to 2.462 GHz (ISM) and 5.745 to 5.805 GHz (UNII-3) frequency bands.

Part 15.407 Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (UNII)

This grant relates to operation in the 5.180 to 5.240 GHz (UNII-1), 5.280 to 5.320 GHz (UNII-2), and 5.500 to 5.700 GHz (UNII-2 Extended) frequency bands.

These grants were secured with the following antennas:

The above grants are Modular Approvals. Specific limitations are indicated on each grant:

  • When using this grant, the PE15N must be installed only in mobile devices (devices which typically operate at distances greater than 20cm, or 7.9 inches, from the human body). When certifying portable devices (those that typically operate at distances less than 20 cm from the human body) a new grant must be secured by the device vendor.

Note: Laird test data may be leveraged by the device vendor to minimize the cost and time associated with the certification process.

Industry Canada

The PE15N is certified to Industry Canada (IC) RSS-210 standard certification. The IC 661A-SDCPE15N certification is based on the testing performed for the FCC certification, using the same antennas and transmit power and covering the same frequency bands. Test reports and data sheets relevant to this certification may be found in the FCC section above.

MIC (Formerly TELEC)

Laird has secured the following MIC certifications:

These certifications were secured with the following antennas:

The following test report in support of the MIC certifications is available:

Device vendors may leverage these certifications and the associated test report when applying for MIC certifications at the device level rather than the module (radio) level.

National Communications Commission

The PE15N (NCC ID CCAB11LP3830T2) is certified to the National Communications Commission (NCC) standards:

Wi-Fi Alliance

Laird has submitted the PE15N to an authorized Wi-Fi Alliance test lab and as a result has received an Embedded Client Certification (Interoperability Certificate ID WFA8343) to the following standards: 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, WPA (both personal and enterprise) and WPA2/802.11i (both personal and enterprise). For those host devices which include the PE15N, the vendor may assert that their device incorporates a Wi-Fi Certified Embedded Client. The vendor need not be a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance to make this assertion but may not use the "Wi-Fi Certified" logo in conjunction with their device.

If the device vendor is a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance, they may have WFA certification transferred to them only if they integrate the already-certified module into their device in a "hands off" manner; in other words, make no changes during integration that would impact the way in which the module operates. Laird will provide consultative services to those vendors who choose to pursue a Wi-Fi Alliance certification for their Laird Wi-Fi equipped devices.

Cisco Compatible Extensions

Laird is a member of the Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) program and has a direct license from Cisco for intellectual property relating to the various versions of the CCX specifications. Laird has submitted the PE15N to an authorized CCX test lab and has been found to be fully compliant with version 4 of the CCX specifications for application specific devices (ASDs). For those host devices which include the PE15N, the vendor may assert that their device incorporates a Cisco Compatible radio module.

Click here for verification of CCX compliance for this product.

Device vendors who are members of the CCX program may also choose to secure CCX compliance for their end device. When incorporating the PE15N into their product with the above software version, the vendor need not be a direct licensee for Cisco intellectual property. Rather, in this case the device vendor need only submit their PE15N enabled device for CCX compliance testing to the version 4 test plan for ASDs. By leveraging Laird's "pre-approved" Wi-Fi software and by testing to the same plan, the vendor has a greater assurance that their actual testing will result in end device compliance. Laird will provide consultative services to those vendors who choose to pursue CCX compliance for their Laird Wi-Fi equipped devices.
