The Laird 45 series PCB-based MSD45N SDIO module combines low-power 802.11a/g/n with a complete software feature set, which is proven on mobile computers and other business-critical mobile devices that operate in harsh environments. No other Wi-Fi® radio module can match the range, robust security, seamless mobility, and easy administration of the MSD45N module.

Each MSD45N module delivers:

Hardware Capabilities

The MSD45N module is designed for use in business-critical mobile devices and the challenging radio environments in which they operate. Key hardware capabilities include:

  • 802.11n: Operating in both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz portions of the radio frequency spectrum, 802.11n is a superset of the popular 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11a standards, so the MSD45N module can be thought of as an 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11n module.
  • Smooth dual-band upgrade: Because it has the same interface, form factor, board connector, and pin definitions as the MSD10G and MSD30AG modules, the MSD45N module provides a smooth upgrade path to 802.11a/g/n.
  • Antenna support: The MSD45N module supports antennas of varying types and gains. The single Hirose U.FL antenna connector allows for easy connection of a dual-band antenna, which is an antenna that supports both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.
  • Low power consumption: With power consumption that's the lowest of any Summit brand module, the MSD45N module maximizes device battery life to provide for full-shift operation.
  • Extended operating temperature: To allow for device operation in extreme environments such as factories, warehouses, freezers, and the outdoors, the MSD45N module provides an extended operating temperature range of -20° to 70°C, which far exceeds the capabilities of most other radio modules.



 Software Capabilities

To operate effectively in a business-critical mobile device, a Wi-Fi radio needs specialized software to deliver the security, trouble-free operations, and manageability that customers demand. Software for the MSD45N module includes a driver, firmware, and an integrated supplicant.

  • Operating system support: MSD45N software operates on Linux with a minimum kernel version of 2.6.37.
  • Security: Compliance with IEEE 802.11i, which is certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance through testing for the Enterprise version of Wi-Fi Protected Access 2® (WPA2®-Enterprise), provides for the highest level of interoperable WLAN security available. An integrated 802.1X supplicant supports authentication via pre-shared keys as well as a broad range of EAP types including EAP-TLS, PEAP-MSCHAPv2, PEAP-GTC, PEAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS, LEAP, and EAP-FAST. Data privacy is ensured via encryption and decryption using AES (WPA2), TKIP (WPA), or WEP.
  • Mobility: A mobile device often roams from one AP to another. When scanning for a better AP or roaming to that AP, a device’s radio cannot send or receive data. If roaming takes too long, a business-critical application that requires a constant connection can be disrupted. Summit brand radios support the fastest roaming in the industry and enable an administrator to tune roaming behavior to the needs of an application and its environment.
  • Administration: SCU enables a user to view, and an administrator to configure, all radio operation and security settings. SCU also enables a user or administrator to view status and troubleshoot issues. All SCU functions are available to centralized management applications through the Summit Software Developer’s Kit (SDK).
  • Integration: Laird provides device manufacturers with the Summit Manufacturing Utility (SMU), a tool that can be used to set regulatory parameters such as channel set and maximum transmit power to provide for worldwide compliance across multiple platforms.

These formal test reports may be leveraged by mobile and portable device vendors as part of their self declaration to obtain the CE mark required by members of the European Union. ETSI/CE rules differ from those of the FCC and IC in that there is no provision for a modular approval. All approvals and certifications must exist at the device level rather than the module (radio) level.

The MSD45N is fully compliant with Annex IV procedures in article 10.5 of R&TTE directive 99/5/EC.

Like all Laird Wi-Fi modules, the MSD45N is fully compliant with European Union Directive 2011/65/EU or Reduction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) as per our Declaration of Compliance.




FCC

Laird has received the following FCC grants for the MSD45N (FCC Identifier: SQG-MSD45N).

FCC Part 15.247 Subpart C

This grant relates to operation in the 2.412 to 2.462 GHz (ISM) and 5.745 to 5.805 GHz (UNII-3) frequency bands.

FCC Part 15.407 Subpart E

These grant relates to operation in the 5.180 to 5.240 GHz (UNII-1), 5.280 to 5.320 GHz (UNII-2), and 5.500 to 5.700 GHz (UNII-2 Extended) frequency bands.

Note: When using this grant, the MSD45N must be installed only in mobile devices. Mobile devices are devices which typically operate at distances greater than 20 cm (7.9 inches) from the human body. When certifying portable devices (those that typically operate at distances less than 20 cm from the human body), a new grant must be secured by the device vendor.




Industry Canada

The MSD45N is certified to the Industry Canada (IC) RSS-210 standard.  3147A-MSD45N, based on FCC certification testing, using the same antennas and transmit power and covering the same frequency bands.




Wi-Fi Alliance

Laird has submitted the MSD45N to an authorized Wi-Fi Alliance test lab and as a result has received an Embedded Client Certification for the following standards: 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, WPA (both personal and enterprise), and WPA2/802.11i (both personal and enterprise). For those host devices which include the MSD45N, the vendor may assert that their device incorporates a Wi-Fi Certified Embedded Client. The vendor need not be a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance to make this assertion but may not use the "Wi-Fi Certified" logo in conjunction with their device.

If the device vendor is a member of the Wi-Fi Alliance, they may have WFA certification transferred to them only if they integrate the already-certified module into their device in a "hands off" manner; in other words, make no changes during integration that would impact the way in which the module operates. Laird will provide consultative services to those vendors who choose to pursue a Wi-Fi Alliance certification for their Laird-equipped devices.

Warranty Statement

Laird Technologies warrants to the original end user customer of its products that its products are free from defects in material and workmanship. Subject to the conditions and limitations set forth below, Laird Technologies will, at its option, either repair or replace any part of its products that prove defective by reason of improper workmanship or materials. Repaired parts or replacement products will be provided by Laird Technologies on an exchange basis, and will be either new or refurbished to be functionally equivalent to new. If Laird Technologies is unable to repair or replace the product, it will refund the current value of the product at the time the warranty claim is made.

This limited warranty does not cover any damage to this product that results from improper installation, accident, abuse, misuse, natural disaster, insufficient or excessive electrical supply, abnormal mechanical or environmental conditions, or any unauthorized disassembly, repair, or modification. This limited warranty also does not apply to any product on which the original identification information has been altered, obliterated or removed, has not been handled or packaged correctly, has been sold as second-hand or has been resold.

This limited warranty covers only repair, replacement or refund for defective Laird Technologies products, as provided above. Laird Technologies is not liable for, and does not cover under warranty, any loss of data or any costs associated with determining the source of system problems or removing, servicing or installing Laird Technologies products. This warranty excludes 3rd party software, connected equipment or stored data. In the event of a claim, Laird Technologies' sole obligation shall be replacement of the hardware.

Duration

This limited warranty applies only to the original end user customer of the product. This limited warranty is non-transferable. This limited warranty is in force for the useful lifetime of the original end product into which the Laird Technologies product is installed. Useful lifetime of the original end product may vary but is not to exceed five (5) years from the original date of the end product purchase. Any repair, component replacement or modification to the original product constitutes the end of the lifetime of the end product as defined here.

Eligibility

Warranty on Laird Technologies products are only applicable if the parts were purchased from Laird Technologies authorized OEMs/distributors/resellers or directly from Laird Technologies.

Limitations

The following parts are not covered by this warranty:

  • Products without the label containing Laird Technologies' serial number or MAC address
  • Products that are purchased from other end users
  • Products that Laird Technologies determines were not purchased through Laird Technologies authorized OEMs/distributors/resellers or directly from Laird Technologies
  • All EOL claims to return back to point of purchase or respective distributors.
