July 24, 2013 –  College freshman will learn about money and how not to spend it this weekend as Jane Lacy discusses financial issues with incoming students. Lacy, product manager for Thermal Materials at Laird, will speak at The University of Akron’s ZipStart summer program on Saturday, July 27, 2013. ZipStart is a program offered through the Admissions Department and provides incoming freshman an opportunity to get an idea on what to expect entering their first year in college.

“Financial issues are not exactly what college freshman want to talk about,” said Lacy. “But it is important that students recognize that the financial decisions they make in college carry on years beyond graduation.”

Lacy, who spoke on the same subject at the first ZipStart session earlier this summer, will cover topics including student loans, budgeting, saving and of course those dreaded credit cards. While the subject may not be one freshman are interested in, Lacy tries to make the session interactive.

“I let the students ask me any question related to finances and I give them honest answers,” she said. “I’ve been asked what I made right out of college and what I make now, how much money I save, what my bad habits were and how I’ve changed them.  How I still struggle with buying shoes. I try to keep it somewhat humorous.”

Lacy is a University of Akron Alum with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and an MBA in Strategic Marketing. As Product Manager at Laird, she manages the thermal materials product lines in North America and Europe. She has participated in a number of volunteer opportunities as a member of the Roo Crew, the University’s alumni volunteer network. She has also participated in speaking opportunities for the Engineering Department’s IDEAs Program, including a keynote presentation at the Mayor’s banquet in March 2012.
